A Small Room With Very Few Opinions For Sale

Swing Fit Studio is one fitting floor, one build bench, and four people on Babcock Boulevard in Pittsburgh. We do not carry inventory to move, we are not owned by anyone who makes clubheads, and the only thing we sell is time and workmanship.

How it started

A Two-Car Garage In Ross Township, 2015

Roland Kaminski spent eleven years behind the counter of a large golf retailer in the North Hills. He was good at it, and he grew steadily more uncomfortable with it. The fitting bay existed to shorten the distance between a customer walking in and a boxed set going out. There was a launch monitor, there was a forty-minute slot, and there was a quota. Nobody was lying to anybody. It just was not fitting.

The thing that finally pushed him out was a member from a public course in Verona who came back three times in one season with the same complaint about his irons. Every visit produced a different recommendation from a different associate, because nobody had written anything down the first time. Roz fixed it in twenty minutes with a lie board and a loft-and-lie machine, then went home and started pricing bench equipment.

The first eighteen months ran out of a garage off Evergreen Road with a borrowed frequency analyser and a hitting net that ended its life full of holes. Word travelled the way it does around here, which is slowly and then all at once. The Babcock Boulevard space opened in the spring of 2018, and the garage is now where the shag bags live.

The rule on the wall

Measure First, Argue Later

There is a strip of masking tape above the bench with four words written on it in marker. It has been replaced twice and the wording has never changed. It exists because the most expensive mistakes in this trade are made by people who are confident before they are informed — and that includes us.

In practice it means the baseline gets recorded before anything is swapped. Your existing clubs get put on the machine and measured cold: loft, lie, length, swingweight, shaft frequency, grip build-up. Roughly a quarter of the time that measurement alone explains the complaint, and the sitting turns into a twenty-minute adjustment instead of a two-hour search.

It also means we will tell you when a change did not do anything. A fitter who never says “that made no measurable difference, put the old one back in the bag” is not fitting either.

Independence

Nobody Here Is On A Manufacturer's Payroll

This is the least glamorous and most important fact about the studio, so it gets its own heading.

We hold no exclusive agreements, accept no volume incentives, and take no marketing support from any head or shaft company. Our component accounts are ordinary trade accounts. When you order a build through us, the component cost appears on your invoice at what it cost us plus a stated build fee. You can see the line items.

The reason is structural rather than moral. The moment a fitting room's margin depends on which brand goes out the door, every recommendation it makes becomes impossible to audit — including the honest ones. Removing the incentive is the only way to make the advice checkable.

  • Fitting fees are charged for the sitting itself and are the same whatever you decide afterwards
  • Component pricing is shown as cost plus a flat build charge, itemised
  • Head and shaft selection is drawn from every account we hold, not from a favoured list
  • If your current clubs are the right answer, that is the answer you get
Capacity

The Floor Is Small On Purpose

One golfer at a time. No second bay, no overlapping slots, no fitter running two sessions and splitting attention between them. The practical cost of that decision is a calendar that runs two to three weeks out through April and May. The practical benefit is that nobody is ever waiting on a machine while their session clock burns down.

It also means the person who fits you is the person who builds your clubs and the person who answers the phone when something is not right in July. There is no handoff, so there is nothing to lose in the handoff.

What that buys you

Unhurried baseline measurement, real time between test clubs, and the freedom to stop and rethink halfway through without stealing minutes from someone waiting.

What it costs you

Lead time. Spring books out. If you want a bag ready for the first warm Saturday in April, the conversation should happen in February.

The room

What Is Actually In Here

  • Hitting area with real turf panels, replaced twice a seasonFloor
  • Doppler launch monitor, calibrated against outdoor carry twice a yearFloor
  • Impact tape, spray, and a lie board that gets used on every iron sittingFloor
  • Loft and lie machine rated for cast and forged headsBench
  • Frequency analyser and shaft deflection boardBench
  • Digital swingweight scale and gram scaleBench
  • Prism gauge for face angle and hosel geometryBench
  • Ferrule turning lathe, epoxy oven, and a pull stationBench
  • Putting surface stimped weekly to match local green speedFloor

Two things we deliberately do not own: a simulator with a golf course on it, and a seating area with a television. Both are lovely. Neither measures anything.

Limits

Things We Will Not Do

Teach You To Swing

We are not instructors. If a change belongs in a lesson rather than in a spec, we will say so and name two teachers in the area who are good at it.

Fit A Swing In Transition

If you are six weeks into a rebuild, the numbers we take today will describe a golfer who no longer exists by June. We would rather reschedule than sell you a fitting of a moving target.

Recommend A Full Bag By Default

A fourteen-club replacement is occasionally the right call and is usually a failure of nerve. We will tell you which changes are worth money and which are noise.
