A 3-wood is sold on a tee shot it will rarely hit. Most golfers here use theirs four times from the fairway or the rough for every one time off a peg, so we test it in roughly that proportion instead of building the whole sitting around a launch monitor's favourite lie.
From a tee it wants length and a high launch. From a clean fairway lie it wants a sole that will not dig. From October rough it wants mass low and forward and a leading edge that does not snag on the way through. No single head is optimal at all three, so the honest fitting question is which compromise fits the lies you actually face.
We start by asking how the club gets used — the honest answer, not the flattering one — and split the testing time to match. A golfer who hits it off the deck three times more often than off a tee should not leave with a head chosen on tee-shot carry alone.
