I came in expecting to be sold a driver and left with the one I already owned, one degree flatter and forty grams lighter in the grip. He talked me out of a nine hundred dollar purchase in about eleven minutes and then charged me for the hour anyway, which is exactly how it should work. The spread on my drives is the thing that changed. I do not hit it further. I stopped hitting the terrible ones.

The September check was the part I did not expect. My wedges had been fine in May and were awful by the end of August, and I had spent the whole summer assuming that was me getting worse. It was the sole. Deirdre showed me on the firm panel in about four shots. Two of them got reground and the difference out of tight lies in September was not subtle at all.

Twenty-two years with the same irons and I had been told twice by other shops that they were too old to be worth touching. Here they went on the machine first and it turned out three of them were more than a degree off from each other. New shafts, everything bent to one spec, grips built up. Cost me less than half of what a new set was quoted at and they feel like one set of clubs for the first time since I bought them.

I had never been fitted and I was braced for a very long sales conversation. What I got instead was a two-part appointment where the second half was mostly spent talking me out of things. I replaced four clubs. The other ten were adjusted. The written card is genuinely useful — I took it with me when I bought a spare wedge online and it meant I ordered the right one.

My question was whether I needed a hybrid. The answer was that I needed two, and that my 5-iron was also finished, which I did not want to hear. They showed me the numbers — my good 4-irons were fine and my average ones were losing nearly twelve miles an hour of ball speed. Hard to argue with that. It is the only equipment decision I have made in a decade that I have not second-guessed.

I was convinced I needed a mallet. What I actually needed was three quarters of an inch off the putter I have had since 2014 and two degrees taken out of the loft. The ball stopped hopping off the face on short putts and I have not thought about my stroke since. Total cost was under sixty dollars and they had every opportunity to sell me a head.

They did not have the shaft I wanted to try, so they ordered it and brought me back nine days later at no charge to hit the real thing rather than something close enough. It turned out not to be the right shaft, which is presumably not the outcome they were hoping for either. We ended up somewhere else entirely and I have complete confidence in the decision because I actually hit both.

Cheapest thing on their price list and the most useful forty-five minutes I have spent on golf. Two of my clubs were going the same distance and I had a thirty-two yard hole between my gap wedge and my pitching wedge that I had been playing around for three years. No fitting, no sale, just numbers on a sheet and a suggestion.

He has grown four inches in eighteen months and his clubs had become a problem nobody had noticed. Half rate for juniors, an hour of proper attention, and a note in the file to check again before next spring. They also told us plainly which two clubs to bother lengthening and which four were not worth the money at his age.
