Cold Mornings, Honest Carry, And The Shaft That Did Nothing Wrong
A shaft gets blamed every November for a problem it almost never caused. The real story is grip pressure, a quicker transition, and a golfer chasing a feeling that has nothing to do with the shaft's actual behaviour.
The complaint arrives on the frequency analyser almost on schedule every year. A golfer books a sitting in November convinced his shaft has “gone boardy” — stiffer, less alive, harder to feel through the swing than it was in August. He wants a softer shaft. On the bench, the frequency reading is identical to what we measured for him in June. The shaft has not changed at all.
What Actually Happens In Cold Air
Graphite and steel are both dimensionally stable across the temperature range we play golf in here. A shaft that reads a certain frequency in August will read the same frequency, within measurement noise, in January. Whatever is producing the “boardy” feeling is not coming from the shaft itself.
What does change, reliably and measurably, is the golfer holding it. Cold hands grip harder without the golfer noticing they are doing it, and a tighter grip transmits less information about where the clubhead is through the swing — which reads, subjectively, as exactly the dead, disconnected feeling that gets blamed on the shaft. Cold also shortens most golfers' transition slightly, producing a quicker, less patient move into the ball that a shaft with plenty of feel in summer can genuinely struggle to keep up with.
What we check first. Before touching a shaft in a November sitting, we put the current one back on the frequency analyser. In nine years of records, it has changed on us exactly once, and that was a shaft with a known manufacturing defect, not cold weather.
Where Carry Actually Goes
The distance loss is real, even when the shaft is innocent. Denser cold air adds drag. A ball that has been sitting in a cold bag or a car trunk overnight is a stiffer, less efficient spring and gives up real ball speed. And a golfer who has not properly warmed up in the cold is swinging measurably slower for the first several holes than he will be by the back nine. All three are genuine, and none of them are the shaft.

The One Adjustment Worth Making
Swapping to a softer shaft to chase the November feeling has a real cost that shows up later. A golfer put into a softer profile to fix a cold-weather symptom arrives in June with a shaft that is now too soft for the swing he actually has in warm conditions, and the whole cycle repeats the following winter with a different complaint. We would rather leave the shaft alone and change the one thing that is genuinely a seasonal variable: the grip. A grip with more texture and a slightly larger build-up gives cold hands something to hold onto without squeezing, which addresses the actual mechanism rather than the shaft everyone suspects first.
What we do write down is a second, honest gapping column — carry distances measured cold rather than assumed from the summer sheet. Knowing your 7-iron plays like a 6-iron on a January morning saves more strokes over a winter than any shaft swap, and it costs nothing but the time to measure it once.
